In this week's programme: Africa is the most underdeveloped continent in the world. According to report on African Development sponsored by the South African Development Bank of Southern Africa, Sub Saharan Africa has experienced a negative development. This is borne out by reduced figures in most developmental indicators like food production, education, industrialization and more seriously the reduction of the average life expectancy. These factors coupled with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which has affected Africa more than any other continent, paints a gloomy picture of Sub Saharan African future. In economic terms Africa accounts for less that one percent of the total world trade. This situation is more serious when it is realized that South Africa accounts for over fifty percent of Africa’s economic out put. However some economic analyst point to Africa’s enormous natural reserves and claim that Africa will be able to recover through the potential wealth it has in natural resources. There is another school that claims that the track record of Africa in utilizing its natural resources is wanting. |
