In this week’s programme, Joe Manciya and Thabisa Dyala talk about Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, otherwise known as PMTCT. HIV Positive women have the same reproductive rights as anybody else, and should not be discriminated against. An HIV positive mother does not necessarily lead to bearing an HIV positive child. Research shows that the chance of transmitting the virus to the child is less than 25% without the use of the antiretroviral drugs, known as ARV’s. It could even be lower than 5% when ARV’s have been administered to a pregnant mother. When the virus has been detected during early pregnancy, you are encouraged to attend Anti-Natal Clinic, or ANC, meetings. The ANC meetings guide you on the safe birth methods, and assist you to identify the risky labour methods. They also inform you on the importance of exclusive breast feeding, or the exclusive formula on feeding your baby. “A Collective Responsibility to Ensure Bearing HIV Negative Babies” We would like to hear your views contact us via email: Talk about it@channelafrica.org |
