In the program this week: May is Africa month. This is when the continent on 25th May, traditionally, celebrates its achievements ie politically, economically and culturally. The establishment of the AU (African Union) and its programs within NEPAD (the New Partnership for Development) for instance, has enabled the continent to, now, bask in the glory of the many struggles for its emancipation. What a right time to celebrate who Africans are, where they come and their destiny! Africa’s intangible cultural heritage, which, arguably, has been downplayed due to foreign cultures imposed on the continent, needs to be preserved. As Africa faces many challenges in her heritage, how can this heritage be reactivated, strengthened and restored. Apart from all other challenges such as the preservation of her indigenous music and dance, there are still positives that can be drawn out of the continent’s intangible heritage. We hear about the Mirembe culture in Kenya. Who practices it and why? Should you like to comment on the subject, do so by writing to: Our Heritage, P.OBox 91313 Auckland Park 2006 South Africa.
